A mysterious area of light and shadow looms above the southern horizon this month around 9 p.m. local time. Under dark skies and through telescopes with wide fields of view, a region known as the Rho (ρ) Ophiuchi complex appears as sheets of sheer fabric rippling from Antares (Alpha [α] Scorpii), Scorpius the Scorpion’s heart, like light on voile.
