Is water ice present or absent in a crater near the Moon's south pole? NASA's Lunar Crater Observing and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) mission is seeking a definitive answer by intentionally crashing a spacecraft into the Moon.
The Exploratorium in San Francisco presents a live webcast of this event, streamed from the Lick Observatory in California, Friday, October 9, beginning at 7:00 a.m. EDT (4:10 a.m. PDT)*. The Exploratorium Web team will cover the mission, the explosion on the Moon, and the plume of matter that will shoot 40 feet (12 meters) into the air from the lunar surface and be visible in large telescopes on Earth.
