In the November 2014 issue of Astronomy, the story “How astronomers measure the cosmos” detailed how astronomers using the 2.5-meter telescope at the Sloan Digital Sky Survey at Apache Point Observatory in New Mexico were conducting the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS). In short, they are looking for evidence of acoustic ripples in the fabric of the universe created just 100 seconds after the Big Bang. Finding what’s left of them will help determine the universe’s expansion rate today.
