GENERAL CATEGORY WINNER: The Milky Way
Tunc Tezel

Astronomy received 20 entries for its 2010 Astroimging Contest in the General category, ranging from shots of star trails to solar halos. The winning entry (at right) is by Tunç Tezel of Bursa, Turkey. The southern Milky Way appears spectacular in this composite image taken from Mangaia, the most southerly of the Cook Islands. Few sources of light pollution exist here, home to only 500 people. The two bright stars at the Milky Way’s center are Alpha (left) and Beta Centauri. They point to Crux the Southern Cross. Near the horizon, two of the satellite galaxies of our Milky Way, the Small (left) and Large Magellanic Clouds are easy to spot.

Astronomy subscribers have accesss to the reamining 19 official contest entries.
