Stephen Hawking has never been so famous. Despite a life of unparalleled scientific success and runaway bestsellers, it took the 2014 movie The Theory of Everything to bring his triumphant life of science amidst his struggles with the debilitating disease ALS to a wide audience. He was a star attraction at the second Starmus Festival, held in late September 2014 in the Canary Islands. There he delivered two amazing talks, one on black holes and the other on the creation of the universe.

Astronomy Editor David J. Eicher attended the festival and captured these images of the great scientist at work and at leisure.
