CCD imaging is fine in its place, but I also love using a quality digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera. Most recently, I’ve been enthralled with the Canon 60Da, which captures all the colors of the sky, including a large percentage of the “celestial red” of red-emitting nebulae. When combined with high-quality telephoto lenses and accurate tracking, the results are breathtaking.
Unfortunately, just as with CCD imaging, getting the most from your DSLR shots requires combining multiple images into a master frame. I use the following approach.
