This artist’s conception illustrates one of the most primitive supermassive black holes known (central black dot) at the core of a young, star-rich galaxy. Astronomers using NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope have uncovered two of these early objects, dating back to about 13 billion years ago. An open cluster duo

M35 and NGC 2158 are two open star clusters that appear next to each other in Gemini. M35 is the larger and closer of the two at a distance of 3,000 light-years; NGC 2158 is older and lies five times farther away. The imager took 2.4 hours of exposure with a 3.6-inch scope and one-shot color camera.
