Last month, I introduced you to some common sky phenomena in the Crystal Palace — a visual array of colorful arcs and rings created when sunlight interacts with ice crystals in high-level clouds.
This month, through sheer serendipity, I will share with you a puzzling observation of some uncommon wonders in this mystical palace of sunfire and ice.
Around noon on July 22, 2007, amateur astronomers Edgar Castro (president of the Guatemalan Association of Astronomy), R. Scott Ireland (Plantation, Florida), and I saw a beautiful 22° halo over a churchyard near Antigua, Guatemala.
