Herschel’s Garnet Star (Mu [μ] Cephei) sits at the northern edge of emission nebula IC 1396. Mu lies 3.6° west-northwest of Zeta (ζ) Cephei.

Stephen James O’Meara toured the “Red Region” of the sky, first described by Irish astronomer John Birmingham as a “space of the heavens including the Milky Way, between Aquila, Lyra, and Cygnus … peculiarly favored by red and orange stars.”
