What is the difference between the expansion of space and time following the Big Bang and matter expanding from an infinitely dense point?

The words “Big Bang” don’t adequately describe the expansion of the universe, which is different than an explosion from a given point in space. In an explosion, an observer sitting far from the center would see material traveling toward her.
