Dwarf galaxy harbors supermassive black hole

This is an artistic impression of record-breaking quasar J059-4351. It's the bright core of a distant galaxy that is powered by a supermassive black hole like the one studied in this new research. Credit: ESO/M. Kornmesser
Exotic Objects, Science

In a cosmic breakthrough, astronomers measure a supermassive black hole’s spin

This artist’s impression shows how ULAS J1120+0641, a very distant quasar powered by a black hole with a mass two billion times that of the Sun, may have looked. This quasar is the most distant yet found and is seen as it was just 770 million years after the Big Bang. This object is by far the brightest object yet discovered in the early Universe.

If nothing, not even light, can escape a black hole, then why do nearly all artist renderings of black holes show an accretion disk and a jet that appears to spew out particles perpendicular to the disk?
