This solar flare was captured August 31, 2012, by the Solar Dynamics Orbiter. In the 1930s, German-American astronomer Hans Bethe showed that powerful nuclear reactions in the Sun's core are what power our life-sustaining star (as well as all other stars), helping scientists develop nuclear power.
