Schwarzschild’s solution to Einstein’s equations describes space-time around a spherical mass. Given enough mass packed into a small enough space — a black hole — Einstein’s theory breaks down at the central point, called the singularity. Theorists suspect once quantum effects are incorporated, this breakdown will disappear.
